Roger Camelo
Hello My name is Roger, I have been volunteering with The Special Needs Colorgaurd of America for 2 years now. I had the opportunity to go with them this year to the Macy's Day Parade. Let me say that it was a wonderful experience being in New York and in the parade. I came into this organization with some experience working with special needs individuals in Beaufort, South Carolina before moving down to Florida. I was born on August 30, 1981 in Miami Beach, but was raised in Beaufort, S.C. My mom, Julia Camelo brought me into working with special need kids and handicap kids at the age of 9. I miss the kids I worked with when I was young! Ellen Kleinert-Cohn - Director of "The Special Needs Color Guard of America" formerly known as the "Florida Special Needs Color Guard" c/o The Florida Special Arts Center, Inc. has given me the opportunity to learn more about individuals with disabilities. I was introduced to Ellen by my future wife Jacquelyn Sears. The individuals that are associated with the gaurd and the art center have a huge heart and are a joy to be around. I am creating a business where I customize the interiors of vehicles. The type of work I do ranges from a simple radio and speaker installation to a full customized interior with tv's, fiberglass parts, re-upholstery, paint work, and bolt on equipment. I also do installations on boats. Currently I'm an intern with John and Bonnie at Coral Springs Software as tech support. They are wonderful people and have been helpful in many ways. I will be working soon with the Florida Special Art Center in there music program. When I was younger I played the drum set as a hobby and was kind of a natural at it. I will take what little I have of playing and teach others at the Florida Special Arts Center. One thing that you will learn from me is that I don't question myself if I want to help someone or not, I do it no matter what! If I don't know something, I will look for someone who does or learn myself and then answer the question. Take some time and talk with some of our members and get to know them. You will be amazed at what they know and what they can do. Don't let a small disability get in your way of doing something that makes you happy. A quote that everyone should remember "Think positive, believe in yourself, and never give up" Don't let the little things in life get you down. I know from experience, where should I start. My parents got divorced when I was around 10 years old. I was in a motorcycle accident in 2005 where I suffer everyday from the injurys that occured in the accident. I could keep going with all the negative things that has happened, but I just want to list a few. Please don't feel bad for me though, I would like to get this out in the open for everyone to know that I am thinking positive, believing in myself, and not giving up on my dreams or goals that I have set. Live the life you have, surround yourself by positive people, and love yourself! I'm sure that things will get better for you once you start thinking like this and practicing them. Thank you Ellen and Jerry for the opportunity to be a part of your group and to all my other friends for being there no matter what!
