Jessica S.

Every person can point to certain events that have shaped their life. For Jessica and I, some of those events are very difficult to think about but are part of what makes Jessica…Jessica! Whether it was just bad luck, G-d’s will, or just life, Jessica was the victim of medical malpractice as an infant and is developmentally disabled. This fact has shaped both her life and mine as a woman and a mother…and although life is very difficult sometimes…we try to focus on the bright spots and the positive. If we have a rough day we both know that tomorrow will be better, and to not dwell on the negative.

There are two life changing events that have given Jessica and I a happy home and friends, and we will both be eternally grateful. The first one was when John Becker became a part of our family. He taught Jessica and me how to have fun, enjoy each day, and look forward to the future. Without his constant support, and his amazing and fun spirit, we would not have the quality of life we have now and experience as many laughs and fun days! He has opened up a new world for me as a woman and a mother, and has given me the strength to let Jessica experience everything life has to offer. He has shown me that Jessica is a capable young woman and despite her disabilities he has helped me let go and expose her to so many of life’s gifts. He believes in us and we believe in him. His family has been unbelievably supportive and he has helped me become closer with my family. His passion for life and goodness is inspiring and Jessica loves him so much, and he is the best father and partner in the world!

The second life changing moment came when my wonderful long time friend, Cheryl Solomon, told me to call the Florida Special Arts Center’s Director, Ellen Kleinert-Cohn. From the very first conversation Jessica, John’s and my life changed dramatically. We instantly became part of this amazing world, showing us that we are not alone. Jessica has joined the Color Guard and we all got to march and participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC! What an amazing experience – one that still brings tears of joy to our eyes. Now Jessica is performing in the Winter Guard circuit in front of audiences that give this wonderful group standing ovations and appreciate their amazing accomplishments!

Jessica also attends the choir, instrumental group (where she plays the bells!) and visual arts. She laughs all the time and has a group of friends that we never even dreamed would be possible. John and I dove in and started volunteering and each experience is fulfilling and joyful. We have a social life and wonderful friends that has grown way beyond our expectations. Our friends truly understand both our joys and our sorrows. Our friendships have gone beyond our common situation and we know that we have made life long friends.

Jessica is a happy social butterfly! She is a beautiful girl with an even more beautiful spirit. She loves music and is completely in love with Justin Timberlake since his first days with N’Sync! Her favorite activities are going to concerts, movies, hanging at the center with her friends and just chillin’ in her room watching her endless supply of dvd’s.

I cannot express my gratitude enough to John and to the Directors of the center - Ellen and Jerry –for changing our life and helping us to look forward to each and every day. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Jessica and Bonnie
